If you have never written an LTE before, here are some guidelines:
- Comment on a recent article (best within a day),
- Be brief, make a clear point, relate to your own life or the local area if possible. Some publications have length limits for LTEs, but if you keep your letter under 200 words you will be within most limits.
- Try to extend, refute or re-imagine the point of the original piece.
- Include your name, town and phone number. (If your letter is chosen, they may call to be sure you wrote the letter, but will not publish the phone number.)
You can send the same letter to as many publications as you like. Most prefer electronic (emailed or uploaded) LTEs. Be sure to send one to the publications that service your community. If you live in the Northeast, copy the Boston Globe as well (see below for specifics).
Emailing a letter to the Boston Globe:
The address is letter@globe.com.
Since the Globe gets many letters, you may not be published. Don’t give up, keep trying.

Very effective tips indeed. I’ll try this tips the next time I’ll write a letter. It’s been almost a year since I’ve last written a letter literally (with a pen and a paper i mean), with texts and e-mails just around the corner.
